In today’s modern economic and social climate, understanding business and how it works is an essential skill to help you navigate not just the workforce, but higher education, and your personal life as well.

Whether your interested in a career in business or finance, starting your own company or brand, or just want to get a better understanding of how to navigate your own finances, there are many courses you can take at the high school level to help you learn about the world of business and finance.

At OVS, we have several courses at different grade levels that students can take to help in all different areas of the business world.

Grade 9 and 10 Courses

Grade 9 Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset (BEM1O) is a great course to get started in your business journey.

In this course students learn what makes an entrepreneur thrive. Subjects covered include developing an entrepreneurial mindset, financial literacy and budgeting, and business communication and branding.

Students will learn these basic skills and how to apply them in real-world contexts. BEM1O is a perfect entry level course to understanding the world of business.

 

 

Grade 10 Launching and Leading a Business (BEP2O) is another wonderful course to help students get started in business.

This course helps students build their marketing and customer relations, financial planning, and business technology skills. They will also learn about operations and human resources management, both of which are vital branches of business.

Grade 11 Courses

Grade 11 Financial Accounting Fundamentals (BAF3M)

This course is strictly about the financial and accounting aspects of business. While numbers may not be everyone’s strong suit, having even a general knowledge of accounting principles is helpful not just for work but for your own finances as well.

Students in this course will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills, as well as an understanding of computerized accounting and how to process accounts for service and merchandise-based businesses.

They will also learn about current ethical issues in the field of accounting and the best practices to ensure they are following the guidelines for ethical financial accounting.

 

 

 

Grade 11 Intro to Entrepreneurship (BDI3C)

This Grade 11 course focuses on further building your entrepreneurial skills, which will help those who might be looking to start their own business.

Students will learn how to recognize opportunities for new business ventures, how to organize their resources, and create a solid business plan to make the most of various business ventures.

Grade 11 Marketing (BMI3C)

One of the most important parts of business is marketing; learning how to gain the interest of the consumer and sell the product or service your company is offering. Afterall, without customers or clients, business won’t be able to achieve financial success.

Grade 11 Marketing will teach students about the consumer, how to do market research, develop a product, branding, pricing, distribution and logistics, as well as advertising and sales.

Even if you don’t have a strong interest in marketing, knowing the basics will be an asset to any business or workplace.

Grade 11 The Individual and the Economy (CIE3M)

A brand-new subject with OVS, this course specifically focuses on the issues and challenges facing the Canadian economy, how the economy works as a whole, and how current economic practices can influence the economy in the future.

Topics covered in the course are economic foundations, microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics and economic issues and challenges.

For any good business professional, understanding how an economy functions and the unique challenges faced by their country, is essential running and working a successful business.

Grade 12 Courses

Grade 12 Financial Accounting Principles (BAT4M)

Accounting is essentially the language of business. From large corporations to small mom and pop style shops, accounting is used to organize and understand all aspects of a company’s financial standing and success.

Grade 12 Accounting builds on the foundational knowledge from the Grade 11 course, getting into more detailed and complex theories and practices, to help prepare students for a post-secondary education in business.

No business would be able to operate well without a knowledgeable and dedicated accounting team.

Grade 12 International Business Fundamentals (BBB4M)

While not every company will operate on an international scale, it is important for business professionals to have a knowledge base to draw from in how international business operations work, and how best to make international connections to expand a company’s base of operations.

BBB4M teaches students the importance of international business and trade for the global economy, as well as influential factors in achieving success in international markets. They will learn techniques and strategies for how to effectively market, distribute, and manage business on an international scale.

Grade 12 Business Leadership (BOH4M)

A vital part of running a successfully business, is having excellent management or leadership. BOH4M focuses on developing leadership skills.

Throughout the course, students will learn how to take one the role of a business leader, manage group dynamics, motivate employees, and dealing with workplace stress and conflict. These type of leaderships skills can go just beyond the world of business, but can be used in all aspects of life. Making BOH4M an excellent course, not just for Business majors but other students as well.
